Church of God History

 

 

1884

 

Insatisfaction with the beliefs and practices of the established churches led Reverend Richard G. Spurling to study the Scriptures and the history of the church.

 

 

1886

 

The 19th of August1886, in a small home in Monroe county in the state of Tennessee, the Reverend Richard G. Spurling gave birth to what he called the “Christian Union”.  This first church had only 8 adult members.

  

1896

10 years later, in a revival at the Shearer schoolhouse, in Cherokee county in North Carolina with the Reverend W. F. Bryant as the main leader, the group from Tennessee, under the direction of Rev. R. G. Spurling joined with the group in North Carolina.  At the time of this revival, over 120 people received the gift of the Holy Spirit with evidence of speaking in other tongues.

1908

The first name give to the church was "Christian Union" followed in 1902 by "Holiness Church".  In 1908 the name was changed to "Church of God". 

 1920

The 31st of August 1931, pastor Helen Swanson Myers founded the first Church of God in Canada.  Mrs. Myers’ Church was in Consul, Saskatchewan.

 2003

This initial group, composed of 8 Christians, has grown to become an influential Pentecostal movement.  The Church of God now consists of over  6,881,000 members in over 33,997 churches in 168 countries. It also numbers 47,744 pastors and 302 missionnaries.

The international offices of the Church of God are found in the city of Cleveland in Tennessee, USA.  The national offices is situated in Etobicoke, Ontario and the office for the Quebec an Maritimes region is in Granby, Quebec.
